The Progress of Tastein Mid-Nineteenth Century England: Art in Wilkie Collins' Early Writing

    Get PDF
This dissertation shows the extent to which Wilkie Collins reflected the changing mid-Victorian perceptions on aesthetic discrimination in his early body of work. A producer of literary commodities for a middle-class public, Collins had an acute understanding of the pivotal changes brought by capitalist development in what concerned the acquisition of taste: once a matter restricted to a selected few and now, as his career in the field of letters progressed, a right demanded by many. Following a close reading of his literary production, essays and correspondence during the 1850s, Collins emerges as an author thoroughly aware of the democratisation of taste that pervaded a crucial decade of the nineteenth century

Incorporating signature verification on handheld devices with user-dependent Hidden Markov Models

Proceedings of the International Conference on Frontiers in Hadwriting Recognition (ICFHR 2008)A dynamic signature verification system based on Hidden Markov Models is presented. For each user model, the number of states and Gaussian mixtures of the Hidden Markov Model is automatically set in order to optimize the verification performance. By introducing this userdependent structure in the statistical modeling of signatures, the system error rate is significantly decreased in the challenging scenario of dynamic signature verification on handheld devices. Experimental results are given on a subset of the recently acquired BIOSECURE multimodal database, using signatures captured with a PDAThis work has been supported by the Spanish Ministry of Education under project TEC2006-13141-C03-03

In this work, authentication with free-form sketches is studied. Verification systems using dynamic time warping and Gaussian mixture models are proposed, based on dynamic signature verification approaches. The most discriminant features are studied using the sequential forward floating selection algorithm. The effects of the time lapse between capture sessions and the impact of the training set size are also studied. Development and validation experiments are performed using the DooDB database, which contains passwords from 100 users captured on a smartphone touchscreen. Equal error rates between 3% and 8% are obtained against random forgeries and between 21% and 22% against skilled forgeries. High variability between capture sessions increases the error rates. This work was supported by projects Contexts (S2009/TIC-1485) from CAM, Bio-Shield (TEC2012-34881) from Spanish MINECO, and BEAT (FP7-SEC-284989) from EU

The algorithm uses a parametrical model to generate the synthetic Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) of the trajectory signals, which are then refined in the time domain and completed with a synthetic pressure function. Multiple samples of each signature are created so that synthetic databases may be produced. Quantitative and qualitative results are reported, showing that, in addition to presenting a very realistic appearance, the synthetically generated signatures have very similar characteristics to those that enable the recognition of real signatures. This work was supported by Spanish MEC under project TEC2006-13141-C03-03

Guided participation in youth media practices

Youth has to deal with some digital practices and develop media discourses on their own. Our study aims to deepen these concepts from the point of view of the guided participation, understood in this case as a collaborative process of media literacy based on culturally significant activities. Our data comes from a series of workshops that took place at the Telefonica Flagship Store (Madrid, Spain) with teens between eight and 14 years old. The evidence was collected by qualitative research techniques such as observation, conversation and descriptive analysis. The results give us some preliminary ideas for discussion: 1) social media practices enable youth to connect their online and offline activities with their interests; 2) the generation of collaborative learning scenarios based on the interaction between young people becomes a fundamental element of media literacy and 3) user-generated content emerges as an identity and habits depiction in media, especially among young people.

We compare the performance of this type of attacks against two different minutiae-based systems, the NIST Fingerprint Image Software 2 (NFIS2) reference system and a Match-on-Card based system. In order to study their success rate, the attacks are analyzed and modified in each scenario. We focus on the influence of initial conditions in hill-climbing attacks, like the number of minutiae in the synthetically generated templates or the performance of each type of modification in the template. We demonstrate how slight modifications in the hill-climbing algorithm lead to very different success ratesThis work has been supported by the Spanish Ministry of Defense, BioSecure NoE and the TIC2003-08382-C05-01 project of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technolog

Combustion is the main method of converting biomass to energy, either by direct heating systems or by boilers. By means of CFD models, it is possible to optimize the behavior of those systems and improve significantly its performance, without incurring the economic and environmental cost of experimental studies. However, modelling of biomass combustion is a complex process that requires a large number of sub-models and computational resources for a detailed description, therefore, different approaches have been developed which depend on the system and simulation objective. In this work, a review of the state of art of modelling of solid biomass combustion in the last years is presented, including classification, description and analysis of several of the main models about the subject.
